From lemonade to People to People

COEUR d'ALENE - It's no vacation for the likes of Megan Stanley, the 13-year-old Coeur d'Alene girl who has been selling lemonade all summer at the corner of East Indiana Avenue and Eighth Street.
But Megan's not some carefree teenager saving up to buy trendy shoes or purses. This girl's saving her money to become a student ambassador with the People to People Ambassador program. Her goal is to earn enough for a trip to Ireland and the British Isles. So far she has made $2,500, which is almost a third of the $8,000 she needs.
"I can't believe I've made that much already," she said. "I thought that by now I'd have maybe six or seven hundred. I was afraid that with the economy and all, people wouldn't have enough money to spend.
"And even though it's not for charity, the People to People program was started to create world peace. It was founded by President Eisenhower, you know."
It hasn't hurt any that Megan's dad has built her one of the best lemonade stands in town.
"Last year I was using a card table," she said, "and I started out doing that this year, too. But then one day my dad told me I wasn't allowed in the garage for a while and then when he finally let me in I saw what he'd made and I almost cried because I loved it so much."
Lots of pinks and purples. You can't miss it.
She sells lemonade, sugar-free lemonade, iced tea and snow cones. There are also brownies, cookies and cupcakes she and her mom bake after business hours. And then there are the daily specials.
"All food products are for a donation," she said. "I usually get a dollar per item. My minimum is usually 50 cents, but I guess I don't really have a minimum."
And, if food isn't your thing, she also sells collectibles such as trading cards and comic books from her own personal collection.
Megan's mother, Teresa Stanley, said that she and her husband pay all Megan's expenses so their daughter can put every penny she earns in the bank.
"I'm just so proud she's working so hard for this," Stanley said.
Who are Megan's customers?
"A lot of my regulars are my neighbors," she said. "One gentleman comes by here every day. But I have to say that more people stop by in cars than walk by."
And Megan is as fastidious a business owner as she is convincing saleswoman.
"I do a thorough wash of my stand and clean out my snow cone machine and lemonade containers daily," she said.
What's so appealing about Ireland?
"I'm Irish," she said. "And I also want to go looking for Nessie. I'm a big fan of mythology - and 'Monster Quest.' "
