SWIMMING

On July 26-28, 31 swimmers from the Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team competed at the Inland Empire Long Course Swimming Championships in Pasco, Wash.

CAST took fifth place overall in the 16-team field. The Crocs also took home the team spirit award for the third consecutive year at this meet.

Coeur d'Alene had two individual champions over the course of the weekend. Sarah Nicholls swept the 13-14 year-old girls breaststrokes, winning both the 100- and 200-meter distances in dominant fashion. Sarah made finals in 7 of her 8 swims, including a 4th place in the 200 IM, 6th place in the 50 freestyle, and 7th in the 400 IM.

The other event winner was Hope McWilliams, who dropped more than 4.5 seconds in the 100 backstroke in a come-from-behind victory. Hope scored points in all 8 individual events, never finishing lower than 12th.

Cole Curtis had drops in all but one of his events, and placed in the top 4 in 7 of his 8 races, including 4 runner-up finishes. His point total was second in the 13-14 boys category. Jon Archer also scored in every event he swam while never placing lower than 13th, capped off by a 5-second drop and 3rd place finish in the 200 backstroke.

Trevor Ray swam only 6 events, but made the most of them by taking top 10 honors in each one. Matt Chastain dropped an average of 1 second per hundred in his 8 races, and for the first time made finals in all his swims.

A pair of 16 year old CAST teammates dueled the whole meet, trading best times. Kade Hern went 7 for 8 on best times, finished in the top 7 for all his events, and placed fourth in the high point race. Ryan English was one lane over for several events in finals, and the competition resulted in over 30 seconds worth of dropped time, a trio of 3rd place finishes, and a point total good enough for 6th place in the 15-and-over category.

CAST next travels to Clovis, Calif., to compete in the Senior Zone meet this week, and will send two swimmers to Irvine, Calif., for USA Swimming's Junior Nationals next week.
