There was no catching Cameron Hayley Saturday evening at Montana Raceway Park.

He was the fastest of the fast.

Hayley led the final 82 laps of the second annual G.E.T. Rich at the Montana Gold 212 to take the checkered flag in the super late model main event and claim the $8,000 first-place check from a purse of more than $35,000.

He also received a one-ounce block of gold for his victory.

The 16-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, had an amazing 6.219 second margin of victory and nearly lapped the No. 4 finisher —Jonathon Gomez.

Hayley led by a full straightaway for most of the final 56 laps he turned on the quarter-mile, high-banked oval.

“It was pretty crazy to have a big lead like that,” Hayley said.

“I lapped up until fifth place.”

Pole sitter Alex Lessor of Kalispell came in second and Agni Howell, also of Kalispell, finished third.

Agni was seventh in the pre-race qualifying.

Lessor and Howell were also second and third, respectively, last year in the first edition of this event.

Defending champ Ryan Wells of Hingham wound up seventh.

“He had the best car for sure,” Lessor said of Hayley.

“He was in a different Zip Code tonight.

“My car was probably the fastest on the short run and at the beginning of the race,” Lessor added.

“Cameron took over at the end.”

There were only three cautions for the 212 laps and those came during the first 62.

“One of the best races I’ve been in in a long time,” Lessor said.

“I was surprised to go 106 laps without a single caution,” Hayley said.

“In all the races I’ve been at in Montana, it has never happened.”

Lessor maintained his front-running spot for the first 31 laps. Following the second restart of the night, four-time Montana 200 champion Gary Lewis of Snohomish, Wash., who started in the third position, moved into the lead on lap 175. He held that spot for 24 laps before heading for the pits with 147 remaining.

“The chain that holds the sway bar on the right front, it (chain) stretched,” Lewis said.

“The car started dragging more and more and it (chain) finally broke.”

It was also disappointing way for him to end his night of racing. Lewis came in with high hopes.

“One of the best cars I’ve had here,” he said.

“The car was handling extremely good.”

Lewis had raced four times this season, always finishing in the top three.

Hayley, who was fifth in the time trials, took his first lead with 150 laps remaining. He held that position until the break after the first 106 laps.

Seventeen cars from a field of 24 then returned to the track for the final 106 laps. On the restart, Lessor took advantage of a Hayley mistake to move back in front.

“I thought I was starting the race, not the flagman,” Hayley said.

“I was still going slow when the green flag came out. He (Lessor) went and I stayed back. It was a communication error on my part and my spotter on how Raceway Park handles restarts.”

That dropped Hayley back as far as third place for a couple laps with Howell moving up to second.

Hayley, however, was back in second with 100 laps to go and 18 laps latter was in command.

“At that point, not too many fears,” Hayley said.

“When my spotter told me I had that big of a lead, I told myself to slow it down even more than before. I wanted to make sure if we had a restart, we would have enough tires to get that big lead again.

“Jeff and Jason Jefferson built this car,” he was quick to add.

“They gave me a great car. To build it from scratch and win the very first race in it is pretty crazy for me and them.”

In Saturday’s main events for bombers, legends, bandoleros and hornets, the winners were Troy Pilgram, Devin Clayton, Brock Denney and Keith Sheppard.

Racing continues Saturday night with the hobby stock 50, super stocks, hornets and street drags.
