Carl Lewis Hendricks passed away in Coeur d’Alene after a long, courageous fight with a rare cancer on June 3, 2013.

Born April 20, 1938, in Fort Lewis, Wash., he married the love of his life, Sherrie Squire, in 1968. Together they raised five children and became the grandparents of six grandchildren.

While being a dedicated father in the Seattle area, he worked full time, earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington, then went on to get his MBA and was a pioneer in composites. In his “spare time,” in his garage he made the first graphite horizontal stabilizers (“wings”) for the Atlas Van Lines and Pay ‘N Pak unlimited hydroplanes — and still always had time to play with his kids or eagerly give them long explanations to the simplest questions; Carl was a man who loved to share his knowledge and love of science and the world, and they never stopped asking him questions.

Carl loved spending time with his family, camping in the woods, enthusiastically singing in the shower and car, oil painting, reading the Bible, and he even dabbled in making homemade wine with homegrown grapes. He was an avid runner who, even into his ’60s, would impress his juniors.

After retiring from Boeing after nearly 40 years as a chemical engineer and manager, he and Sherrie moved to Bonners Ferry, where he became very active in the community.

Over the last 17 years, he dedicated many hours with Habitat for Humanity and the Bonners Ferry Visitor Center, and also acted as past president of the Chamber of Commerce for a term.

Carl is survived by wife Sherrie; his children, Susan Hendricks and husband Dan Papke of Federal Way, Wash., Pamela (Roger) Havens of Spirit Lake, Kevin and wife Nancy Ryan of Seattle, Dan MacLaren of Seattle and Trina Hendricks of Seattle.

His beloved grandchildren are Roger and Mary Havens, Alexander Papke, Ethan and Erica MacLaren, and Penelope Hendricks. He’s also survived by his brother and his wife, Ed and Joyce Hendricks; and sister and her husband, Lois and Chuck Lawrence of Redmond, Wash. Also surviving is sister-in-law Jo Hendricks of Salem, Ore.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2013, at English Funeral Chapel, 1700 N. Spokane St., Post Falls.

English Funeral Chapel has been entrusted to handle the final arrangements. Please visit Carl’s online memorial at www.englishfuneralchapel.com.
