Windows on Whitefish mosaic project continues

There is still time to get involved with Stumptown Art Studio’s Windows on Whitefish community mosaic project.
In January 2012 Stumptown Art Studio launched the community public art project. Windows on Whitefish involves the creation of a series of large mosaic murals installed on the exterior wall of the Latitude 48 building at Second Street and Central Avenue in downtown Whitefish. The theme of the murals depicts the mountain range during each of the four seasons and is designed to capture the essence of life in Whitefish.
On Sept. 21, the first of the four murals, Spring, was unveiled with a proclamation by the mayor and community celebration. On May 2, the second mural, Summer, was made public.
Deb Stika, artistic director of Windows on Whitefish, has developed the images that will be used in the murals and will assist and instruct the public in the construction of the murals.
Community members are invited to participate by taking the beginning $75 class, in which they will learn the art of mosaic making. Participants will create their own mosaic fish with the skills they acquire in the class.
After taking the class, they are welcome to come to any of the free community sessions to work on the actual 6- by 9-foot windows. For those who have completed the beginning class, there is now the option to take an advanced class in which a hanging garden charm will be made for a base price of $125.
Upcoming fish classes in June are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday and from 5 to 9 p.m. June 20. Advanced classes for the hanging garden charm will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 21.
Work on the third panel, Fall, has begun and is awaiting participation from those who have already taken a mosaic-making training class.
These free community sessions are being held June 13, 15, 22, 24 and 26 Call for times and details.
All classes and sessions are held at the former Coldwell Banker building, 105 Baker Ave., Whitefish.
A full schedule of classes, community workshops and grouting sessions are planned for this summer and can be seen on the website, www.stumptownartstudio.org, by clicking on “WOW” on the home page.
