The Philadelphia Phillies selected Washington State's Jason Monda in the sixth round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft on Friday.
Monda was selected as an outfielder by the NL East club. A junior from Olympia, Wash., Monda also spent time at first base, designated hitter and pitcher in the 2013 season for the Cougars. He was the 181st player selected overall.
The left-handed hitting Monda batted .294 with a seven home runs and 40 RBI. His dingers tied Yale Rosen for the team lead and his RBI were tops on the Cougars.
Gonzaga senior left-handed pitcher Tyler Olson was drafted in seventh round by the Seattle Mariners.
The Spokane native and graduate of University High was the 207th overall selection and the seventh player drafted by the Mariners. Olson is the second Zag to be picked in the draft. Junior Marco Gonzales was a first round selection of the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday.
Olson returned to the Bulldogs for a fifth season after getting drafted by the Oakland Athletics a year ago. The lefty was the 11th choice of the 17th round for the A's.
However, Olson's decision to return to the Bulldogs paid dividends as the left-handed hurler was sensational. Named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, Olson went 9-4 with a 2.48 ERA in 101 2/3 innings.
"We are very proud and excited for Tyler," Gonzaga coach Mark Machtolf said. "We were excited when he decided to return to us and fulfill his goal of winning a WCC championship. With that goal realized, he bolstered his draft stock and this is a great accomplishment for a local guy. We wish him the best of luck with the Mariners."
Rounds 3-10 took place Friday. The lone Idaho player selected so far is center fielder Mason Smith of Rocky Mountain High in Meridian, taken by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round, the 118th pick overall.
The draft concludes today with rounds 11-40.
