Post Falls art students honored for milk carton creation

POST FALLS - Post Falls High art students rose to the top with their creation using milk cartons to depict the Empire State Building with King Kong.
The creation, made with more than 1,800 milk cartons, was among the three high school winners in the national Made By Milk Carton Construction Contest sponsored by Evergreen Packaging in Memphis, Tenn.
The students won $1,500 for the school's art department with the honor. It was also the second semester in a row that PFHS produced a winner.
"These students took great pride in their work and went above and beyond my expectations to create something that was truly a work of art," said Derek Kahler, PFHS art teacher. "They pushed themselves to go bigger and better than last semester and ended up with a winning creation.
"The level of competition between my classes increased by tenfold and every group created great projects. I am very proud of my students, not only for winning, but for challenging themselves to reach a higher level artistically. We are all very excited to see what next year will bring."
There were 15 high school entries and 108 total in the contest this semester. Landmarks was the theme.
Mustang Elementary from Mustang, Okla., was the grand-prize winner with its creation of the Golden Gate Bridge using more than 26,000 cartons.
The contest, launched in August 2012 to promote carton recycling and milk consumption among school-aged children, resumes this fall.
