LOOKOUT PASS - An Idaho State Police trooper shot and killed the driver of an orange Scion XD with Montana plates during a traffic stop two miles west of the Montana border on Wednesday.
Just before noon, a Shoshone County sheriff's deputy responded to the area to perform a welfare check on the driver of the Scion, who was parked in a turn-out area on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90.
The ISP trooper arrived shortly after to assist the deputy, according to a press release issued by the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.
When the deputy contacted the occupant of the car, he was found to be in possession of a handgun. The release said a struggle ensued between the deputy and the driver, and the ISP trooper fired his service weapon and struck the driver.
The driver of the vehicle, a white male in his 20s, had not been positively identified as of Wednesday night. He was taken to Shoshone Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy has been scheduled for a later date, the release said.
Shoshone County deputies and ISP troopers secured the shooting scene and investigators were called in from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office to investigate the incident.
Both the trooper and the deputy's names are being withheld pending investigation, and both were placed on administrative leave. Neither officer was injured in the altercation.
The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office is looking for other drivers who may have witnessed the altercation. Witnesses are encouraged to call the KCSO at (208) 446-1300.
