Quick work again for Jones

WORLEY - There was the usual assortment of jabs, hooks, haymakers, takedowns, knockouts, chokes and submissions - and of course some of the requisite blood that often comes with it - as a host of Coeur d'Alene Mixed Martial Arts fighters picked up wins on Thursday Night at the King of the Cage "It's Personal" action at the Coeur d'Alene Casino.
The main event, a world light heavyweight championship fight between Coeur d'Alene's Trevor Prangley (29-9-1), who was riding a six-fight win streak, and Tony Lopez (32-12), who lost to Prangley in a controversial decision in December of 2012, had not yet started at press time.
The 12-fight card featured some stellar performances by fighters from both Prangley's American Kickboxing Academy and Legacy MMA from the Post Falls/Coeur d'Alene area.
AKA fighter Will Noland (10-3) prevailed in the closest fight of the night, winning a split decision over George Stork at 190 pounds. The fight featured mostly standup, with both fighters landing plenty of blows. Noland was bloodied, and took several solid shots, but kept up the pressure and landed enough shots of his own to pull out the win.
The quickest fight of the night came at 265 pounds, as former North Idaho College national champion wrestler and current AKA fighter Jamelle Jones ran his record to 2-0 with a knockout of Chris Hatcher just 16 seconds into the first round, leaving a capacity crowd buzzing and wanting more.
Jones, who is currently helping coach wrestling at NIC, nearly ended the fight with a rear naked choke, before quickly gaining top mount and raining down punches to the back of Hatcher's head. Jones's first fight ended by submission at 48 seconds, and his second one didn't last nearly as long, and it was clear to the fans in attendance that Jones has a bright future in the MMA game.
"The sky is the limit. I'll keep training to get better," said Jones, who has yet to be tested in the cage. "I took a shot and I had a submission, but I went to what I know best - using my hands. I wanted to finish the fight, get the win and get experience."
AKA fighter Josh Queen (5-2) appeared to be losing the first round in his 265-pound fight, before locking in a Kimora hold to beat Nampa's Kip Ramos by tap-out submission at 3:36 of round one. Queen, who described his standup-based style as that of a "banger," returned to the cage victorious after a two-year layoff. Queen dropped more than 50 pounds to get ready for the fight, and was surprised when the fight went straight to the mat.
"He's a striker and I thought it would be rock 'em, sock 'em," said Queen, describing how he earned the arm bar submission. "He kept leaving that hand hanging over, and that's kind of my move. I heard some chunking and booming in there (elbow) and that's when he tapped out."
Legacy MMA's Gabe Lopez scored a third-round TKO at 1:25 over AKA's Leo Glover at 205 pounds, settling in after a slow first round to run his record to 9-3. Glover had the first takedown, but Lopez was able to do some damage from a top mount and the fight was called due to strikes.
"The first round was tough, I was just trying to figure him out," said Lopez. "In the second and third round I found my niche and went with it - striking and ground and pound."
The opening fight of the night was packed with fast and furious action, as a pair of Coeur d'Alene fighters squared off at 135 pounds. AKA's Zane Douglas landed a flurry of blows early in the first round, but Legacy MMA's Nick Wells bounced back to win a frenetic toe-to-toe exchange late in the round.
Wells (2-0) managed two takedowns early in the second round, eventually winning by a rear naked choke at 2:56 of the second round.
"He hit me, and when he hit me, I felt empowered," said Wells, who wrestled at Lake City. "I tried standup in the first round and I was like 'take him down, do what I'm good at.'"
In other action on the undercard, Brandon Sly won a decision over Sandpoint's Kody Smith at 145 pounds, Reid Hazelbaker won a decision over Oscar Garnica at 230 pounds, Roma Pawalek scored a TKO at 1:26 over Katie Law in the lone female fight of the night, Mike Hanks secured a triangle choke over Aaron Sutton at 160 pounds, and Sandpoint's John Hale won a decision over Dylan Morgan at 145 pounds.
