Post Falls police arrested two men during a high-risk traffic stop after the region's automated license plate reader alerted the authorities of a stolen vehicle traveling through the area.
They were arrested around 10 p.m. Wednesday, and officers also found drugs, paraphernalia, knives and two loaded firearms with the men.
They were eastbound on Interstate 90 when cameras spotted their vehicle, and they were pulled over and arrested between Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls Police Chief Scot Haug told The Press.
Several Post Falls police officers, including K-9 units, and a Kootenai County Sheriff's Office deputy responded to the area and located the silver 2011 Subaru Forester.
The driver was identified as Darwin G. Overby, 41, of Moses Lake. Officers determined Overby was a fugitive from justice with an outstanding felony warrant from Washington state. He also was taken into custody for grand theft of a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, and driving while suspended, police said.
Passenger Christopher L. Johnson, 39, of Butte, Mont., was charged with possession of a controlled substance and for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Police said he had a loaded Glock model 9 mm firearm at the time of the stop, police said.
Two other men, who were passengers, were not charged with any crimes and were released.
Post Falls police detectives and Richland police are returning the stolen vehicle to the registered owner, police said.
Law enforcement agencies submit license plate numbers of reported stolen vehicles for entry into the License Plate Recognition camera system.
As vehicles pass through designated camera areas, emergency communications officers are alerted of possible matches. If a match is confirmed, officers will attempt to locate the vehicle and make a traffic stop, police said.
