So fit

So you think you are fit, do you? Well over 800 high school football athletes showed up in Portland Oregon this weekend at the Nike Sparq Combine to test just how fit they are. Leave it to Nike to create a way for high school football athletes to see how they stack up to other athletes their own age.

Each year Nike has football combines all over the country. A combine consists of certain tests the players do and then they rate them for their overall performance. The rating then shows you where your strengths and weaknesses are with their fitness.

The components of the combine test speed, agility and overall power. They weigh in and take their height. The 40-yard dash is next and tests their raw speed. They then test their agility in the side shuttle. It is a way to see their lateral speed between a set of cones. Then they move on to the ball toss. They have to kneel and throw with two hands a weighted ball and they mark how many feet they can throw it. This marks their core power.

The next step is the vertical jump straight up off the ground. The data then gets entered into their profile and they receive a score card on just how well they rank with other kids their age. It is quite an incredible event to watch. Athletes and their parents came from all over the west.

The thing that struck me the most was how dedicated these kids are when it comes to their physical strength. They train and work and lift weights and run. They never give up every year trying to get their score better. All I could think of is why we as adults don't do that anymore? Why don't we have a goal and make a plan to achieve it?

According to Clinton Kelly of The Chew, "Small changes can make big differences in your life."

So I wonder what small changes will you and I make for our health this summer? It doesn't have to be what these high school athletes do, but it could be just small changes like riding your bike to work or skipping my favorite Starbucks frappe. What if we decided that Wednesday night is paddle-board night and Friday night is kayak night with a few friends for the summer? Just asking.

See, I know you can do it. There were 800 athletes who did it. I watched them. Their dedication and drive was incredible. They had a Nike scorecard to prove it. What does your scorecard say? How do we rate in our fitness? Do we eat right? Sleep well every night? Drink plenty of water? How many days has it been since you walked anywhere over 15 minutes?

Kegel mania started years ago. In fact most of the women I know have heard about Kegel exercises, even if they don't really understand them or know how to do them very well. Often women will say, "I think I'm doing it right, but I'm really not sure."

T'was the night before

When I was little I loved the magic of the poem “The Night Before Christmas.” My parents had a well-worn book that had beautiful illustrated pictures and they would read it to me each Christmas season. As soon as I could read it myself I would slowly read each page and get lost in my imagination. I would pretend that St. Nicholas was coming to my house in Maryland, landing on our roof with his reindeers and sneaking in my living room to deliver the “goods.” I would wait up as long as I could to try to get a peek of him. I wanted to know him. I wanted to watch him make his delivery. I wanted to see if he was really “jolly.” I wanted to believe. I wanted to believe in something bigger and better than anything I'd ever known.

Caregivers make the world a better place

Last week one of my incredible, long-term employees came to me and said, "I know what you need to write about next week. You need to write about all of our amazing patients that are caregivers. They need to know they are not alone and that we can help them, make this time of their lives better." I smiled and we proceeded to talk about the art of caregiving and the caregivers themselves.
