Even with rain, Logan Pass still slated to open today

Glacier National Park has incurred some wind and rain problems the last couple of days, but Going-to-the-Sun Road is scheduled to open over Logan Pass this afternoon, provided that the weather doesn’t get too rough.

Forecasts call for continued rain showers, wind gusts up to 40 mph and possible snow today in the park. As of Thursday afternoon, snow was falling at higher elevations; about one inch of slush was on the alpine section of Sun Road. The temperature at Oberlin Bend, just west of Logan Pass, was 30 degrees, and crews were removing mud and rock debris from the road to prepare it for vehicle traffic.

The debris was largely the result of heavy rains on Wednesday — 2 to 3 inches fell across much of the Flathead Basin, according to the National Weather Service.

On the east side of the park at Many Glacier, Swiftcurrent Lake was rising rapidly, prompting park officials to deploy sandbags at the bridge over the lake’s outlet, said Denise Germann, the park’s public affairs specialist. Several years ago, the lake rose so high that water was crossing the bridge, which provides access to Many Glacier Hotel.

Germann said there were reports of some trail damage, and the Cracker Lake campground was temporarily closed due to flooding.

High winds downed trees in the park, mostly in the Apgar and Fish Creek area. The park’s backcountry permitting cabin in Apgar sustained roof damage after it was struck by a falling tree.

The east side of Sun Road, which was opened to Logan Pass last week, was temporarily closed at Jackson Glacier Overlook Wednesday night but reopened Thursday.

Waterton Lakes National Park reported that heavy rains triggered a flood warning that led to some area closures as well as road and trail closures.

The National Weather Service reported rapid rises on Flathead Basin rivers. The main stem of the Flathead River at Columbia Falls was expected to approach its 13-foot flood stage today and then decline steadily over the weekend.

While all 50 miles of Sun Road should be open, the visitor center won’t open until Saturday, and hours of operation may be limited. Restroom facilities and potable water will be available at the pass.

Bicycle restrictions are now in effect on Sun Road through Labor Day. Bicycle travel between Apgar and Sprague Creek Campground and eastbound travel from Logan Creek to Logan Pass is not allowed on the road from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The park’s free shuttle bus service on Sun Road will operate from July 1 through Labor Day.

Rehabilitation work will continue on Sun Road this summer, with construction activity between Avalanche Creek and Logan Pass planned through August. East of Logan Pass, construction will occur between Rising Sun and Siyeh Bend starting July 8 with activity underway 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday.

Visitors should expect up to 40-minute maximum construction delays for one-way travel across the entire road.
