Pat Riley was stunned on a recent morning when he discovered his daughter's car had been stolen from outside his Coeur d'Alene home.

"(Kaytlin) had paid for it mostly by herself as a responsible young adult," Riley said of his daughter's white two-door 1994 Honda Accord.

"No signs of forced entry and the vehicle was locked."

The Rileys are among the victims in a rash of recent vehicle burglaries in Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene.

While most of the vehicles have been recovered - left abandoned not far from where they were stolen - the Accord is among those still unrecovered.

Post Falls had eight stolen vehicles in the past month and two vehicles - a white 1990 Honda Civic and a black 1995 Nissan pickup - have not been recovered, according to police.

"In some cases, they're being found just a few blocks away," said Post Falls Police Capt. Greg McLean, adding that there was a similar string over spring break. "There hasn't been a lot of damage and property taken - loose items and some electronics."

McLean said the spree has appeared to slow down in the past week, however.

Detectives in both Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene believe the suspects are using shaved keys to enter the vehicles and start them.

Post Falls hasn't arrested anyone in connection with its recent vehicle burglary cases.

Coeur d'Alene Police spokeswoman Christie Wood said Coeur d'Alene has also had a string of thefts and a juvenile male was recently arrested.

"We think he was responsible for most of them," she said, adding that he was charged with grand theft and is in jail. "He was not taking the cars very far. We think he used them to do residential burglaries."

However, there's still investigative work to be done, Wood said.

She said there is a "very prolific" suspect stealing cars in the area and then dumping them in Spokane and vice-versa. Wood said police have a suspect in the cases.

"We think the cars are used as transportation to do residential and auto burglaries," she said.

Another vehicle and gun theft suspect recently was injured in a rollover accident in the Weiser area. He has not been charged yet, however.

Wood said most of the vehicle cases appear to be for immediate transportation, not for re-sale purposes.

"Most of them are drug users," she said.

Some spots in Coeur d'Alene where vehicles have been snatched are near 10th Street and Harrison Avenue, Dalton Avenue and Pleasant Way, and the area around Julia Street Apartments. The Post Falls thefts have been scattered throughout the city.

"The majority of vehicles stolen are '90s models and a lot of Hondas and Subarus," she said.

Coeur d'Alene recently recovered a stolen 1998 Camaro from the Cougar Gulch area that had been rolled and totaled. There are two youths suspected in that case, but police don't have the evidence to make an arrest.
