COEUR d'ALENE - The controversial current draft of the Kootenai County Unified Land Use Code will get some needed revisions, county officials promised Friday.
"We're still very much wanting the process to continue, but don't want to push a bad document through," said Kootenai County Commissioner Todd Tondee. "We really want to have a good document."
He doesn't anticipate a full rewrite, but said some organizational and structural revisions are necessary. Tondee said the county will closely review public input submitted so far about the draft and consider that in the revision process.
"We're going to look at all those comments," he said.
He added that county officials will look for themes in the input.
The county commissioners on Friday accepted a recommendation by the county's planning commission to make revisions. The board had opened the door for that recommendation, Tondee said.
"I think it was important for us to tell them it's OK to slow the process to get a document they're happy with," Tondee said.
In a press release Friday, the county said: "In order to proceed with the best possible draft code proposal, the board and planning commission have jointly decided to postpone setting new dates for the continuation of the planning commission hearing and deliberation process."
The planning commission will revise the draft with help from Bret Keast of Kendig Keast Collaborative, the consulting company.
Once completed, another public hearing notice will be published and a second 60-day comment period will be opened.
The current comment period during the review period will remain open.
The county says the goal continues to be an update of the development ordinances with adherence to the 2010 Comprehensive Plan.
Pressure started building after that plan was adopted to update the land-use codes to enforce the new plan.
