COEUR d'ALENE - A 39-year-old Coeur d'Alene man was sentenced this week to serve up to six years in state prison for providing false information to the sex-offender registry regarding his place of residence.

Marcus S. Wall holds a lengthy criminal history, including felony convictions for rape, burglary and failure to register as a sex offender. He has multiple misdemeanor convictions for DUI, injury to a child, operating a vehicle without liability insurance, driving without privileges, eluding an officer, failure to provide proof of insurance and obstructing an officer.

"His inability to follow Idaho law regarding the sex-offender registry, and violating the terms of his probation, when combined with his lengthy criminal history, all indicate an unwillingness to follow rules in place to protect our community," said Prosecutor Barry McHugh.

First District Judge Ben Simpson, who sentenced Wall, ordered the first two years of his sentence to be fixed and the following four years indeterminate. Wall was also sentenced to the time he had already served for violating terms of his probation on a prior conviction for failure to register as a sex offender.

"Judge Simpson's sentence provides Mr. Wall an opportunity to show the Department of Correction that he has had a change of heart, or he will be in prison for all of the six years imposed," McHugh said. "It is an appropriate sentence under the circumstances."

Kootenai County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Josh Studor handled the case with the help of the North Idaho Sexual Offender Task Force, which investigated the matter, and the Idaho Department of Correction, which attempted to supervise Wall.
