Chiefs top Royals in OT

VICTORIA, British Columbia — Mike Aviani scored 3:38 into overtime as the Spokane Chiefs beat the Victoria Royals 4-3 in a Western Hockey League game Friday night in front of 4,929 at Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena.

Spokane (38-24-2, 78 points) moves into fourth place in the Western Conference following Tri-City’s loss on Friday.

Mitch Holmberg scored eight seconds into the Chiefs’ first power play to give Spokane a 1-0 lead, but Victoria scored two power-play goals to take a 2-1 lead after the first period.

Carter Proft scored for Spokane to tie the game at 2 after the second.

Blake Gal scored early in the third period for Spokane, but Logan Nelson’s second goal of the night tied the score at 3 and sent the game into overtime.

Garret Hughson had 29 saves for Spokane.

The teams play again tonight at 7.
