Driver crashes car at airport
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 11 years, 10 months AGO
HAYDEN - A man fleeing law officers drove through a fence, crashed his car at the Coeur d'Alene airport and was later arrested.
Jared L. Salamina, 22, of Athol, was charged with one count of probation violation, which has no bond, in addition to three other misdemeanors.
According to a press release, a Kootenai County sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a black Honda Civic for a stop sign violation about 1 a.m. Friday at Lacey Avenue and Government Way.
The car initially failed to stop for the deputy, but did stop several blocks later. As the deputy was walking up to the car, the driver sped away.
"The deputy pursued the car a short distance, but discontinued the pursuit quickly due to the fleeing car's excessive speeds and weather conditions," the release said.
Based on a check of the license plate number, the driver of the fleeing vehicle was believed to be Salamina, the release said.
About 4:30 a.m., an anonymous caller told KCSO he had picked up Salamina and drove him to his house in the Athol area.
"His parents were going to take him to the hospital because he had crashed his car near the Coeur d'Alene airport," the release said.
The car was later located at the airport, where it had been driven through a fence and crashed into a fuel pump depot. The accident caused an estimated $40,000 in damages to property owned by Resort Aviation and spilled about a gallon of aviation fuel.
Deputies found Salamina and his mother driving south on U.S. 95 near the Garwood area. They stopped the vehicle and detained Salamina, who was transported to Kootenai Medical Center, where he was later released and then taken to the Kootenai County jail.
He was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report the crash and reckless driving. Charges for felony eluding are pending as well as probation violation charges.
Salamina is on felony probation for previous drug charges.
