Another alleged drug trafficker heading eastbound on Interstate 90 through Shoshone County was busted by Idaho State Police Cpl. Kevin Kessler Wednesday.
Ronald J. Olson, 59, of Minneapolis, Minn., was arrested Thursday night after Kessler uncovered just over five pounds of marijuana in Olson's Ford Taurus. This marked the second drug trafficking arrest in 2013, and just one of a series of trafficking busts made by Kessler in the past few years.
According to court documents, Olson was heading eastbound on I-90 in a gold Ford Taurus when Kessler noticed Olson wasn't signaling lane changes. The officer pulled Olson over at 6:28 p.m. at mile post 63 near Pinehurst.
Olson was accompanied by a passenger, Dale Youkin of Minnesota, and Kessler could smell the odor of raw marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to court documents. The two individuals denied having marijuana in the Taurus, and Kessler conducted a probable cause search.
Kessler said he found the Youkin's luggage less than three ounces of marijuana and a metal pipe with pot residue inside. He then found two paint pale containers in the truck that contained 5.2 pounds of marijuana, which would have a street value of around $16,000.
Kessler seized the marijuana before arresting Olson for drug trafficking. Court documents say Kessler determined that Youkin was not involved with the 5 pounds of marijuana, and arrested the 58-year-old Youkin for misdemeanor marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Olson was arrested for a felony marijuana trafficking (five to 25 pounds), he is being held at the Shoshone County Jail without bond.
This marks the second of the year after Kessler arrested Chad Clark of Washington Jan. 18 for trafficking between five and 25 pounds.
The largest bust for Kessler came when he stopped Serafin Jaimes Moreno, an alleged member of the Mexican Drug Cartel, on Dec. 13. Moreno's vehicle was found to have 120 pounds of marijuana concealed.
Less recently, Kessler arrested Minnesota-native Brandon Ray Barry Nov. 14 for trafficking 28.5 pounds of marijuana. A few months later on March 29, 2011, Kessler stopped Portland-native Samuel Marso and uncovered 35 pounds of pot. And on Oct. 30, Kessler arrested Brian Taber of Wisconsin for trafficking 80 pounds.
