NAMPA - Post Falls' season-long shooting woes finally caught up with them, and the Trojans exited the state 5A boys basketball tournament with a 56-49 loss to Madison of Rexburg on Friday afternoon at the Idaho Center.
But the Trojans, despite going two and out, could walk out of the arena with their heads held high, Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. The Trojans, who finished 11-15, made it to state as the fourth seed in the four-team Region 1 tournament, and led Highland by 14 points in the first half before faltering.
"I think there's a real sense of accomplishment," McLean said. "I think it's hard, as a young person, when everybody tells you, 'Oh, you're not going to be very good ... We've lost all that talent; we're not going to be very good. It's harder on kids, and our guys accepted the challenge. I'm so proud of the fact that the kids never made an excuse, ever. I thought they came to play every night, really hard. They brought it."
On Friday, Post Falls came out and hit its first four 3-pointers - two by junior Dalton Thompson - and led 22-11 after the first quarter. The Trojans built their lead to 33-19 late in the half, and still led by 11 at halftime.
Madison ramped up the pressure on defense in the second half, and caught up at 33 with an 11-0 run to start the third quarter.
Joe Pfennigs came off the bench and gave Post Falls a lift in the second half, scoring seven points, and making three of the Trojans' five baskets of the half. Post Falls hung close until the shots stopped falling, and Madison pulled away at the free-throw line, finishing 19 for 21 from the line.
"We played pretty good defense," said Keaton Corr, who scored nine points, as did Thompson. "If we could have executed on offense, I thought we could have done a lot better. It's like anxious (when the shots aren't falling); you really want to score, but you just can't. But you keep trying your hardest."
Post Falls made just 5 of 17 from the field in the second half. For the game, the Trojans were 8 for 15 from 3-point range (Thompson was 3 for 5, Corr 2 for 4), but 6 of 23 from 2-point range.
"After playing this many games, sooner or later, the law of averages catches up to you," McLean said of his team's shooting. "You hope maybe tonight it's going to be different, but you get to the state tournament, there are no bad teams. The second half we just didn't shoot over, and you just can't turn the ball over. I thought we had more unforced turnovers (than in recent games)."
Lyle Sutton, a 6-1 junior guard, scored 18 points for Madison. Senior post Kameron Jackson added 11. Stockton Berry had four steals for the Bobcats, who forced 15 Post Falls turnovers.
Junior post Corey Koski had six points and eight rebounds for Post Falls.
