MOSES LAKE - Moses Lake Police Chief Dean Mitchell was honored for his 34 years of service at this week's city council meeting.

Mayor Bill Ecret presented Mitchell with a plaque recognizing his dedication to protect and serve the citizens of Moses Lake. Mitchell announced his retirement last month, serving his last day today.

"In addition to what Chief Mitchell has done with the police department, he has also raised the bar for all of us that have volunteered and work with our community to make it stronger," Ecret said. Ecret said, speaking to a high school student in attendance, Mitchell is someone to look to as a role model and a person to emulate.

Each member of the Moses Lake City Council thanked Mitchell for his service.

"It's been a long time. I want to congratulate you on how well you've run our police department here in Moses Lake," said Council Member Brent Reese.

Mitchell started his career with the Moses Lake Police Department in 1979 and was promoted to chief in 2004.

Mitchell said the department has come a long way since he joined the force.

"This department is comprised of some outstanding individuals," he said. "We are very careful in selecting who we hire." Mitchell added he is impressed with the foresight and vision of the city council in strengthening the community.

"Thank you very much for your confidence. Thank you very much for allowing me to serve you," he said.
