School board candidates sought

Area school districts are seeking candidates for the May 21 trustee elections.

The filing deadline is March 22 at 5 p.m. Candidacy forms can be picked up at district offices and at the Kootenai County Elections Office, 1808 N. Third St., Coeur d'Alene.

Candidates must be registered voters residing for at least 30 days in the zones in which they are seeking election; and have at least five signatures of registered voters living in the zone.

Terms are four years.

The deadline to file as a write-in candidate is April 5.

Here's a roundup of the openings by district:

COEUR d'ALENE - Zone 1 covers the entire area east of 15th Street from the school district's northern to southern boundaries. Brent Regan now holds this seat.

Christa Hazel has filed a petition of candidacy for election to this seat.

Zone 4 covers the area south of Kathleen Avenue and west to the district boundary south of the Spokane River. North of the river between Atlas Road and the west boundary of the district, south of the Industrial Park. The area south of Garden Avenue and east to 15th Street and then south to the district boundary near the southern shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene. Ann Seddon now holds this seat.

Zone 5 has a northern boundary that runs along Dalton Avenue from U.S. 95 east to 15th Street. The zone's eastern boundary extends south along 15th Street from Dalton Avenue to Garden Avenue. The southern boundary runs from the intersection of Garden Avenue and 15th Street west to Northwest Boulevard, and then the zone extends north along Lincoln Way/U.S. 95 to the intersection of Hwy 95 and Dalton Avenue. This seat is now held by Jim Hightower.

Tom Hearn has filed a petition of candidacy for election to this seat.

POST FALLS - Zone 1, which is south of the Spokane River and west of McGuire and Howell, is held by Steve Gobin.

Zone 4, the central part of the city from Idaho west to Chase and from Mullan north to Prairie, is held by Donagene Turnbow.

Zone 5, east of Highway 41 and east of Greensferry to Mullan in the Ponderosa Elementary area, is held by Julie Hunt.

Former trustee Dave Paul has filed to run for Zone 1.

LAKELAND - Zone 4, held by Brian Wallace, includes Hauser and the Rathdrum Prairie north of Post Falls.

Zone 5, held by Larry Brown, includes most of Rathdrum.

ST. MARIES - Zone 1, which includes portions of the Santa, Fernwood, Emida and Benewah Valley areas, is held by Christine Ashmead.

Zone 2, which includes Capitol Hill, the St. Joe River including part of Shoshone County, Evergreen Terrace, Garden Tracts, the St. Maries River area and Flat Creek, is held by Sandy Kennelly.

PLUMMER-WORLEY - Zone 1, held by Terri Blessing; Zone 3, held by Ida 'JR' Gustin; Zone 7, held by Paul Daman.

KOOTENAI - Zone 1 (Harrison), held by Will Butler; Zone 4 (Black Lake), Martha George; and Zone 5 (O'Gara), John Myhre have openings.

The Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, St. Maries and Kootenai school districts will float supplemental levy proposals to voters on March 12.
