MOSES LAKE - A Moses Lake retiree died Saturday night after being shot at his home in Cascade Valley.

Neighbors identified the man as Steve Hughes, 60.

Grant County sheriff's deputies were called about 9:30 p.m. Saturday for an alleged assault at a home on the 7700 block of Clink Road Northeast.

When deputies arrived, they found a man had been shot, according to a press release issued Sunday.

Hughes was taken to Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake and died a short time afterward.

According to Agnes Lopez, Hughes' landlord and neighbor, Hughes moved to the area about two years ago and worked as a mechanic. Other neighbors said he usually kept to himself and regularly worked on vehicles parked outside his home.

"He seemed like a decent guy," Lopez said. "All I know is he's gone."

Lopez said she and other family members were outside when they heard a loud bang in the area of Hughes' home. Lopez said Hughes was living with a woman who was reportedly his girlfriend.

The girlfriend reportedly told Lopez a subject allegedly knocked on the door and when Hughes opened the door, he was shot point blank.

Lopez said she saw a man just after the shooting walking west on Clink Road and turn onto Arrow Street then was gone. She also said she saw a white vehicle leaving the scene just after hearing the shot.

Detectives spent Saturday night searching the man's home and interviewing witnesses, according to the report. The sheriff's department stated there is little public information ready for release at this time.

"Though it is early in the investigation, I'm reassuring citizens we don't believe this was a random shooting," Sheriff Tom Jones said.

Neighbors said the area is fairly quiet and not much usually happens.

"It's scary because we haven't had anything like this happen around here all these years," she said. Lopez has lived in the area since 1973.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.
