Vandals' Barone earns WAC Player of the Week honor

DENVER - Idaho big man Kyle Barone had back-to-back double-doubles last week and came one point shy of a career-high when he scored 26 in a win against Texas State, and Monday he was honored with his second Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week selection of the season and fourth of his career.

Barone, a 6-foot-10 senior center from Garden Grove, Calif. (Pacifica HS), recorded 13 points and 15 rebounds in a 74-56 loss at UTSA. He connected on 6 of 11 shots from the field and also dished out three assists against the Roadrunners.

He scored 26 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in a 90-81 win at Texas State. He also tallied three blocks and two assists, hit 12 of 17 shots from the field and was 2 of 2 at the free throw line in that game. His 26 points against the Bobcats was his eighth 20-plus point outing of the season, and one point shy of his career high of 27 points.

On the week, Barone averaged 19.5 points, 14.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game. He shot 64.3 percent (18 of 28) from the field.

Barone will play his final game in the Cowan Spectrum on Saturday when the Vandals welcome Seattle U for senior night. Barone and fellow seniors Mike McChristian, Mansa Habeeb and Wendell Faines will be honored before the game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

WSU women to face Arizona State in Pac-12 tournament

Washington State will face Arizona State in Thursday's opening round of the Pac-12 Conference women's basketball tournament at KeyArena in Seattle. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. and will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.

Washington State (10-19, 6-12 Pac-12) will be the No. 8 seed while the Sun Devils (13-17, 5-13 Pac-12) will be the No. 9 seed. The Cougars swept the season series with ASU, 77-65 in Pullman and 54-43 in Tempe.

The winner will face No. 1 seed Stanford (28-2, 17-1 Pac-12) on Friday at 6 p.m.

Whitworth men will host Emory in second round

SPOKANE - The NCAA has selected Whitworth University as the location of the upcoming NCAA Division III men's basketball second round playoff game between the 6th-ranked Pirates and Emory University.

The game will be on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Whitworth is 25-3 after Saturday night's 75-69 win over Redlands in the first round of the national tournament. The Pirates are in their seventh straight NCAA tournament and eighth overall. Whitworth is the regular-season and tournament champion of the Northwest Conference.

Emory is 20-6 after rolling to a 77-56 win over visiting Randolph (Va.) in a first-round game in Atlanta. The Eagles are making their first appearance in the national tournament since 1990. Emory finished in a three-way tie for the championship of the University Athletic Association and received an at-large bid to the national tournament.

Whitworth and Emory have never met in men's basketball, however the two schools just met up in the opening round of the women's national tournament, a game won by the Eagles in Atlanta.

Tickets for Saturday's game are $10 for adults and $5 for students, youth and senior adults. All seating is general admission and tickets will only be sold at the door. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

Rathdrum Parks and Rec seeking men's hoops players

The Rathdrum Parks and Recreation Department is taking registration for an adult men's basketball league.

The program is open to all players 18 years or older and not in high school. Games will be played on Sundays starting April 7.

Cost is $390 and registration is due by March 29.
