Graduation party

The committee organizing this year’s graduation party for the Columbia Fall High School Class of 2013 is accepting donations for prizes, giveaways or funds for the event. Donated items or funds can be dropped off at All About Memories, 3585 Highway 40 or by mailing to Columbia Falls Class of 2013, Parent Committee, P.O. Box 2852, Columbia Falls MT 59912. Teen parents

The Columbia Falls High School’s Tykes and Teens Hero Preschool will be held from April 26 through May 31 from 12:50 to 2:10 p.m. each day. Cost is $25. A “meet the teens” event will be held in Room 113B in the high school on April 25 from 12:50 to 1:20 p.m. For more information, contact Lynne Thuesen at 892-6500 ext. 283 or 233.

School bands

The eighth annual Glacier Kiwanis “Nite of Jazz” fundraiser will take place in the Columbia Falls High School Little Theater on Monday, March 11, at 7 p.m. featuring musicians and bands from various Flathead Valley high schools. Tickets are $5 adults and $3 students available at the door. For more information, call Carla Weber at 253-9707.

School calendar

Planning for the 2013-2014 School District 6 calendar is now in progress. A preliminary draft will be available for viewing and comment from March 6 to 18 at the School District 6 office, 501 Sixth Avenue West, and online at www.sd6.k12.mt.us. Deadline for comment is 4 p.m. on Monday, March 18.

Climate change teachers

Glacier National Park and the Glacier Institute are accepting applications for a four-day climate change teacher workshop to be held June 24-27 at the Glacier Institute’s Field Camp in West Glacier. Room and board will be provided free of charge. Participation is limited to 20 teachers. For more information, visit online at www.glacierinstitute.org/workshop or call 406-755-1211. Writing contest

The Authors of the Flathead is sponsoring the 2013 High School Student Writing Contest for students in grades 9-12. Students can win $300, $200 and $100 for short stories and $125, $75 and $50 for poems. Mail works to 2013 Student Writing Contest, Authors of the Flathead, P.O. Box 7711, Kalispell MT 59904-0711. A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
