4-goal burst in third period lifts Chiefs past Ice

SPOKANE - Blake Gal had two goals and an assist as the Spokane Chiefs scored four goals in the third period to beat the Kootenay Ice 6-3 in Western Hockey League play Saturday night in front of 9.056 at the Spokane Arena.

Spokane (41-25-2, 84 points) moves into a tie with Tri-City for fourth place in the Western Conference after the Americans lost to Prince George in other WHL action on Saturday in Kennewick, Wash.

Jason Fram opened the scoring for Spokane in the first period with a power-play goal to take a 1-0 lead after one. Kootenay tied the game early in the second on a power-play goal, but Brenden Kichton's 22nd goal of the season gave the Chiefs a 2-1 lead after two.

Kootenay center Jaedon Descheneau tied the game with the first of his two goals in the third period. Mitch Holmberg and Gal scored goals 2:18 apart to give Spokane a 4-2 lead.

After Deschaneau's second goal at the 9:50 mark, Gal scored 35 seconds later to give Spokane a 5-3 lead.

Alessio Bertaggia capped the scoring with an empty netter - his 11th goal in 13 games with Spokane since being acquired in a trade.

With his two assists, Kichton passed former Chief Pat Falloon for second all-time in franchise history with 196 assists. Ray Whitney is the franchise leader with 207.

Spokane hosts Prince George on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
