Salt Lake loses; Whitworth marches on

COOLIDGE, Ariz. - The Central Arizona Vaqueros (29-4), ranked 10th in this week's NJCAA poll, beat the fifth-ranked Salt Lake Bruins 88-78 in the District 1 championship game on Saturday night to advance to the NJCAA tournament in Hutchinson, Kan., starting March 18.
Salt Lake (28-4) - which was charged with 19 fouls to Central Arizona's seven - waits with fellow Region 18 school North Idaho College (26-5) to find out if they'll receive an at-large bid to the NJCAA tournament.
JuWan Buchanan led Salt Lake with 24 points, and Skyler Halford, who recently committed to BYU, added 14.
The four at-large bids are expected to be announced on Monday.

SPOKANE - Colton McCargar scored a career-high 26 points to lead 6th-ranked Whitworth over Emory University in the second round of the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
The Pirates (26-3) advance to play Mary Hardin-Baylor (24-5) in next Saturday's round of 16. The location of that game will be announced today.
The Eagles finish the season 20-7 after claiming a share of the University Athletic Association championship and their first NCAA tournament victory since 1990 with last Saturday's win over Randolph.
Dustin McConnell added 17 points while Larkin finished with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Wade Gebbers scored 11 and dished four assists and George Valle totaled 10 points.
Jake Davis ended the game with 22 points for Emory.
The Pirates have reached the Division III sweet 16 for the fifth time in school history.
