Spin bikes to raise funds for two local charities

Spin cycles, also known as stationary bikes, are usually used for working up a sweat. But on March 16, Montana Athletic Club’s spin cycles will be used to raise funds for the Bigfork Food Pantry and Montana Wounded Warriors.

The first two fundraisers raised $3,500 each year for the Bigfork Food Pantry, and the Montana Wounded Warriors was added last year. Last year’s fundraiser upped the ante and raised $4,000.

Event organizer, Peter Leander of Bigfork, thought up the fundraiser in 2009. He said he was pedaling on his bike and listening to Bruce Springsteen while thinking about the challenges other people face when the idea struck him that he could get more out of the exercise than just his own sweat.

“It’s our neighbors and people we know and we see everyday. I think that’s the most important thing, to take care of our own,” Leander said. “I think sometimes we read about it in the paper and forget about it, but we owe them a lot and they have a lot of challenges. They stepped out of the workforce and have medical needs, and it’s the least we can do to help them.”

Cyclists gather sponsors to contribute based on the amount of time peddled, distance, or with a flat rate donation. Then on the day of the fundraiser, MAC’s 13 spin bikes will be reorganized in a circle formation so cyclists can visit while peddling for charity.

Leander emphasized that spin cycles are suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels, from young children to the elderly. Participants can spin for just a few minutes or all day if they want.

“People think you’ve got to crank it on a spin bike, but it’s just fun,” Leander said.

Prizes donated by local businesses will be given out throughout the day as cyclists chat, burn calories and listen to music, which can be requested ahead of time on the fundraiser’s Facebook page, facebook.com/spinforfood.

This year’s prizes include: a preowned Giant “Boulder” Mountain Bike with front suspension and custom handlebars donated by Montana Adventure Sports, a night at Swan River Vacation Condo, bottles of wine from The Jug Tree and a massage from Rachel Klempel. Gift certificates are also up as prizes from multiple local businesses.

The Jug Tree also donated Culligan water for the event so cyclists only need to bring a refillable bottle. Snacks will also be provided.

The fourth annual “Will Spin For Food” spin cycling fundraiser will be held at the MAC on March 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pledge forms are available in Bigfork at Leander’s law office near Brookie’s Cookies, Montana Bear Food, The Jug Tree, and the Bigfork Area Chamber of Commerce.

Spin bike experience and a MAC membership are not necessary for participation, just the drive to help others. All ages are welcome.
