POST FALLS - A 32-year-old Coeur d'Alene man allegedly caused an estimated $20,000 in damage breaking into money machines at a Post Falls car wash.
David W. Rollins was arrested on Monday for felony malicious injury to property at the Post Falls Car Wash Plaza at Highway 41 and Mullan Avenue.
He's also charged with misdemeanor petty theft for allegedly stealing $222 worth of bills and was wanted for driving while suspended.
Post Falls police Capt. Greg McLean said there have been multiple other car wash burglaries in Post Falls recently. An investigation continues on those cases.
Rollins, who has a theft history, was contacted by an officer early Monday morning when he was carrying a gas can and didn't use a crosswalk when he crossed Seltice Way near Potlatch Road.
A few minutes later, the officer, who had obtained Rollins' name, was advised that Rollins was wanted and a suspect in recent car wash burglaries. During the arrest, the officer found $222 in $1 and $5 bills in his socks and small computer parts in his back pocket.
After booking Rollins into jail, the officer learned that the car wash had earlier been burglarized and that Rollins and his vehicle were in the surveillance video.
Rollins was evasive when asked about the car wash burglary at first, but eventually confessed to the crime during an interview, according to the police report.
A pry bar and other tools were located during a search of Rollins' vehicle.
"(The car wash owner) provided many angles of a male matching the description of David driving the black Dodge and using a silver pry bar to open the vending machines," the report states.
Eight of the nine vacuum money machines were allegedly broken into, along with machines in the car care center, a wash bay and the automatic wash area.
