• World Cup podiums — Ted Ligety continued to dominate Giant Slalom this week with another win at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. Mikaela Shiffrin slipped into second in the ladies’ Slalom standings with a Bronze medal at Ofterschwang, Germany. Unusual for a 17 year-old to be disappointed with World Cup Bronze. Julia Mancuso pushed into the top 10 with a strong eighth place finish.

• Western Region Championships — Two local athletes competed at the Western Region Championships being hosted by Mission Ridge, Wash. Races were held on excellent, hard snow conditions all week. Scott Snow came out of the blocks fast, winning both Super G’s and the first Slalom. On the second day of slalom he booted out and had to hike, finishing 54th. He won the second run from that spot, but it wasn’t enough for another podium.  

Lani Wahl had a great week, scoring substantial FIS points in each event. She moved up in every race, including 48 spaces in the first Slalom, earning her the rare move-up award. Amongst the large U18 division, she finished 17th and 19th in the Super Gs, 21st and 36th in Giant Slalom and 14th and 17th in Slalom. Snow heads to the North American Championships in Canada this week while Wahl will be training for the Western Region Spring Series.

• Raclette anyone? — Nate Holland took the Snowboarder Cross Silver medal in a 48 racer field at Arosa, Switzerland this week. In addition to the medal and some prize money, he received a huge wheel of Swiss cheese. Good eating! He and brother Pat moved on to the next SBX competition.
