CBHA: Weight management is all about eating right

March is National Nutrition Month; the theme for this year is "Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day."

Cindy Rosenow, CBHA Registered Dietician, says the trick is to improve your diet and find a balance in your food choices.

"We all have unique lifestyles, traditions and health concerns," she said. "Plus, we all like different foods."

Many diets fail because people find them boring, restrictive and uninspiring. All foods can fit into what you eat.

"The trick is to eat smaller portions," Rosenow said. "Eat healthy foods that you enjoy. Athletic, vegetarian/vegan, corporate and family lifestyles all have special nutritional needs. You'll want to find healthy foods that help you get through the day."

The food and nutrition experts at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommend the "Make MyPlate your plate" system.

What that means is to fill half of your plate with your favorite fruits and veggies; you need some protein, which should be lean and about three ounces.

Make at least half of your grain choices whole grains and be sure to include low-fat or fat-free dairy products like milk and yogurt.

Rosenow recommends that, instead of a whole plate of pasta, cut that down to half a plate. Add a green salad, some meat in the sauce and maybe some fruit for dessert.

She also recommends fruit as a healthy snack between meals.

Rosenow works closely with CBHA medical providers to help patients manage their weight.

"A healthy eating plan can help prevent and treat a variety of health concerns," she said. "We can help develop a plan that allows you to enjoy your favorite foods while you meet your nutritional needs and health goals."

Our plan, the morning of April 6, was to drive out to the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge and hike on one of the trails. There were six of us who gathered that morning at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church Parking lot — too many for one car. Anna Short, our leader for the day, drove the lead car and the rest of us followed. We did eventually take our hike; however, we had a bit of adventure along the way.

Dr. Tomblin grew up in Southern California around the Torrence area. “I didn’t grow up around snow, so being here and experiencing it is exciting,” she replied when asked her thoughts on Eastern Washington’s snowy December and January. She attended Santa Clara University and graduated from the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at University of Southern California. She learned about the CBHA Residency Program through her dental school. “Coming to Washington was the first time I had been out of the state of California,” she said. She interviewed at several Washington dental locations and chose CBHA because “it was clear to me that something special was going on at CBHA.”
