Interstate 90 is a go-to route for drug traffickers trying to transport their supply from the West Coast back east, but Idaho State Police have been making sure lately that Shoshone County is as far east as the traffickers get.

Wednesday, ISP made its third trafficking marijuana arrest in just three weeks and fourth since the start of 2013.

Wisconsin native Michael Rose, 34, was arrested Wednesday after ISP Cpl. Kevin Kessler discovered approximately 21 pounds of marijuana in Rose's black Chevrolet Suburban.

According to court documents, Rose was heading eastbound on I-90 just past milepost 45 between Pinehurst and Smelterville when Kessler pulled the vehicle over for failing to obey a traffic control devise. Kessler also noticed the Explorer's windows were tinted below the legal limit. Once pulled over, Kessler noticed Rose was acting suspicious.

"Because of my training and experience, with what was said, the manner in which it was said and the totality of the circumstances I was confronted with ... I felt that Rose was involved in major criminal activity," Kessler said in his report.

According to the report, Kessler then called in the K9 unit to detect if there was any drugs. The K9 discovered the presence of an illegal odor, and Kessler then conducted a probable cause search uncovering 23 packages of marijuana that weighed about 21 pounds.

Kessler also discovered a jar of hashish, or "hash," a marijuana grinder and a marijuana pipe with less than three ounces of marijuana inside.

Kessler arrested Rose and charged him with marijuana trafficking (five to 25 pounds), possession of hashish and possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to use. Rose was booked into the Shoshone County Jail where he is being held without bond.

This marks the third drug trafficking arrest Kessler has made in 2013 after arresting after Ronald Olson of Minnesota Feb. 27 for trafficking 5.2 pounds of marijuana and Chad Clark of Washington Jan. 18 for trafficking between five and 25 pounds.

More recently, ISP Trooper Jim Hall arrested Minnesota native Alexis Preston for trafficking marijuana (25 pounds or more) when Hall uncovered 65 pounds of marijuana in Preston's vehicle after pulling him over when he was also heading eastbound on I-90 between Pinehurst and Smelterville.

The 65 pounds found on Preston is the biggest trafficking bust since Dec. 13 when Kessler stopped Serafin Jaimes Moreno, an alleged member of the Mexican Drug Cartel, on Dec. 13. Moreno's vehicle was found to have 120 pounds of marijuana concealed.

Less recently, Kessler arrested Minnesota-native Brandon Ray Barry Nov. 14 for trafficking 28.5 pounds of marijuana. A few months later on March 29, 2011, Kessler stopped Portland-native Samuel Marso and uncovered 35 pounds of pot. And on Oct. 30, Kessler arrested Brian Taber of Wisconsin for trafficking 80 pounds.
