Joan Karen Devine, 88

Our dear Mother, Grandmother and friend went peacefully and quietly “to be with the Lord” Thursday, March 14, 2013, at home, surrounded by her family.

Joan was educated at St. Mary’s Academy in Southern California. She went to the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Calif., and then enlisted in the Navy at age 20 for the duration of the war in 1944.

Joan was trained at Hunter College in New York and stationed at San Diego Naval Hospital. She was always very proud of her military service.

Following her military service she applied for work at the Southern California gas company where she met and was interviewed by her future husband, Raymond. They were married in 1950, and enjoyed 25 wonderful years together. They had two wonderful daughters, Suzanne and Becky.

Joan was a gifted artist, loving mother and wife, and caring friend to many with whom she maintained friendships from early childhood. She loved the Lord and her family, flowers and all of nature. She enjoyed watching birds, loved living by the ocean and painting landscapes and flowers, and could whistle amazingly. She was a wonderful, kind and loving person who left sunny California to live near her family in Montana because family meant the world to her.

Joan was an active member of the Pacific Grove Artists Association and had several one-man art exhibits there. She worshiped at Central Bible Church in Kalispell and enjoyed friendships with the ladies in her Bible study group.

Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband Raymond and daughter Suzanne.

She is survived by her daughter, Becky Madison; granddaughters, Joanna Bauer and husband, Chad, and children, Jordan and Dylan, Bethany Knudsen and husband, Jake, Laura Madison, Alexis Wallace and husband, Buck and children, Destiny, Denali, Delani and Daelen, and Angela Ogle and son Aedyn; and many other family and friends whom she loved.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 18 at Central Bible Church in Kalispell. Pastor Ron Youde of Central Bible Church and Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home are caring for the family.
