COEUR d'ALENE - First she sang and he slammed.
Then they closed their season on a high note, with wins and Most Valuable Player honors in the 10th annual North vs. South All-Star basketball games Saturday at North Idaho College.
Highland High senior Dakota Gonzalez got the South girls basketball team in tune in the second half.
Gonzalez scored five straight points to start the second half, keying a 14-5 run as the South girls beat the North 91-61.
"My sister (Dylan Gonzalez) just wanted to come up here and have a good time," Dakota Gonzalez said. "Getting a chance to play with players that we've competed against all year was a great experience."
Highland's Clark Wilkinson won the slam dunk contest preceding the boys game, then scored 21 points as the South won 102-68 over the North.
"The game kind of went our way down the stretch," Wilkinson said. "And I got a chance to hit some open shots."
It is the first time in all-star game history that both MVPs have come from the same school.
Lapwai’s Natahnee Spencer beat Lakeland’s Matt Horne 6-5 to win the 3-point contest.
The games were the last to be played on that floor at NIC — the original floor when Christianson Gym was built in 1949. Plans are to tear out the floor and replace the bleachers on the lower level beginning March 25.
Girls: Before the game, the Gonzalez twins — who have signed with Kansas — were asked by South coach Cal DeHaas to sing the national anthem.
“We said yeah and he had us sing it. It was awesome to get to do that,” Dakota Gonzalez said.
Dakota Gonzalez had 13 points. Utah State commit and Capital High standout Liz Landreth scored a game-high 16 points.
DeHaas, who coached at Coeur d’Alene High this year, along with former Coeur d’Alene High and North Idaho College standout Lindsay Stark, filled in for the twins’ high school coach Tony Green, who was selected, but was unable to attend.
“They asked me last week if I could pinch-hit for them,” DeHaas said. “It was a hoot because we didn’t know a lot of them. We just wanted to sub them in and out and give them a good time.”
Tied at 29 at halftime, the South outscored the North 62-32 in the second half.
“We talked about being unselfish in the second half,” DeHaas said. “I thought we were being too selfish in the first half, taking quick shots and not passing the ball around. We were focused more on the defensive side and it really paid off.”
Hallie Gennett of Post Falls scored 14 points, Caelyn Orlandi of Coeur d’Alene 11 for the North.
Brooke Litalien (Post Falls) and Spencer (Lapwai), soon-to-be teammates at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, combined to score seven points for the North.
“It was kind of nice to get a chance to play with her,” Litalien said. “Now, we know how to get each other open. We had a good chance to meet and talk about next year.”
“It was good to see where we’re at as a team and as teammates,” said Spencer of Litalien. “It was really nice to get a chance to play together.”
The South now leads the all-time series 7-3.

Hayden, who helped lead Timberlake to its first state boys basketball tournament appearance since the school opened in 1998, will continue his playing career at Division III Crown College in Watertown, Minn.
Wendt said he will also continue his career at college next year, most likely at an NWAACC school.
“It was fun to get back on the court again,” Wendt said. “We didn’t really finish the season that well. I’m going to play college basketball, but am not sure where yet. They’re all pretty local and not too far away from home.”
Wendt said that those interested are Big Bend, Westminster, Southwestern Oregon and Walla Walla.
The 6-foot-7 Wilkinson said he will also play college basketball after returning from an LDS Church mission in two years.
“I’m going right out of high school,” Wilkinson said. “Once I get done doing that, I’m going to play somewhere — but I haven’t decided where yet.”
