X-RAYS: Support bill backing licensure

I am a radiologic technologist working here in northern Idaho. My current duties require I take X-rays in support of physicians in making an accurate diagnosis of patients.

Many of you may be aware of the risks when radiation of any kind is utilized in the health care arena. I believe it is critical that the personnel employed at health care facilities be certified when asked to utilize radiation of any sort.

Patient care and safety are compromised when there is no training or certification in my profession. Senate Bill 1115 was introduced on Feb. 21. As one of only five states in the nation with no licensing standards for the personnel who perform medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures, the bill will require individuals to secure a license before performing radiologic procedures. Introduced by the Judiciary and Rules Committee by special request of Sen. Lee Heider, the bill is now with the Senate Committee on Health and Welfare awaiting a hearing.

You have a great opportunity to help improve the quality of health care in Idaho. It’s crucial for all of Idaho’s radiologic technologists to be qualified and educated before performing medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures. Establishing licensure standards will ensure that all technologists are clinically competent, educationally prepared, and improve the quality of patient care.

Please take a few moments of your time and become a part of this grass-roots effort. Contact your senator and let him or her know you support S. 1115.
