Margaret “Jean” Pilik, 93, of Post Falls, passed away March 15, 2013, in Rathdrum. She was born March 1, 1920, in Creston, Wash., to Marshall and Frances Smart.
Jean attended Valley Ford High School and was Valedictorian. Jean moved from Spokane to Post Falls in the late 1950s and married Jim Pilik. Jean was a secretary for NARVE and was a past Worthy Matron of The Order Of The Eastern Star. Jean enjoyed travel, dancing, camping and crafts. She made Christmas ornaments for her family and crocheted blankets for the VA Hospital.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Les Olson of Rathdrum and Marilyn and Lester Gardner of Post Falls; also her son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Judy Kidd of Moscow. Jean is also survived by her eight grandchildren, six great and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 1980; and her longtime companion, Elwood Horrocks. A brother, Bill Smart and a sister, Marie Magnuson also preceded her in death.
Jean’s aunt, Sonora Dodd, founded Father’s Day in Spokane in 1910 in honor of Jean’s grandfather, William Jackson Smart. He was a single parent who raised his six children.
The family suggests that contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be sent to the Shriner’s Hospital For Children, 911 W. Fifth Ave., Spokane, WA 99204.
