RATHDRUM - Lakeland High drama students are headed back to a simpler time - the 1920s.
Lakeland's Hawk Stars Drama Club will present the three-act, family friendly comedy "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" Wednesday through Friday at 7 p.m. at the school commons.
"People should consider seeing it because it isn't something that has been produced in this area before and will provide a new and fun story," said Becca Palmer, Lakeland's drama director. "They may remember the movie version with Marilyn Monroe, but this story is slightly different."
Tickets, on sale at the door, are $7 for general admission and $5 for students with Associated Student Body (ASB) cards, seniors and kids younger than 10.
"Between my talented actors and fantastic stage crew, the show has come together like a dream," Palmer said. "The kids have planned a wonderful surprise for curtain call that can't be missed."
Twenty-five percent of the proceeds after expenses will benefit Locks of Love, a nonprofit that secures hair donations for wigs for those in need. Friday night's show will include a silent auction of custom birdhouses designed by students that will benefit Locks of Love.
The drama is based on a novel written by Anita Loos and published in 1925. Loos was inspired to write the book after watching a sexy blonde turn intellectual H.L. Mencken into a lovestruck schoolboy.
Palmer calls the performance a "true comedy of manners."
The play follows blonde Lorelei Lee, played by Nicole Boyer, and her best friend Dorothy Gilbert, played by Megan Whitney, as they take a trip to Paris following their high school graduation to "improve their minds."
However, things go awry on the ship when a misunderstanding leads to the ladies being thought of as extortionists. Will the mixup prevent them from finding intriguing gentlemen?
