Empty Bowls event targets hunger

POST FALLS - Empty Bowls will help fill the Post Falls Food Bank.
The second annual Empty Bowls Luncheon - a fundraiser for the food bank - will be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Jacklin Arts and Cultural Center, 405 William St.
Supporters will be able to take home a handcrafted ceramic bowl painted by local artisans.
Two hundred fifty bowls have been made for the event, which raised $2,000 last year for the Post Falls Food Bank and Community Action Partnership in Coeur d'Alene. This year's event will benefit the Post Falls nonprofit only.
"We thought by splitting the event and having Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene each do their own event, in their own community, we could raise twice the money for each area food bank," said Cynthia Keck, event organizer.
Fleur de Sel, Big Bear Deli, Garden Plaza, Red Lion Templin's, North Idaho College Culinary Arts Program and Texas Roadhouse are donating soups or rolls. Hands to Art and the JACC made services and space available at cost.
Cost of the lunch is $15 per bowl. Children cost $5 and refills are $3. Bowls will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. A small silent auction will be held during the lunch.
Distinguished Young Women of Post Falls candidates will host the event as part of their community service for the scholarship contest at Post Falls High on April 27 at 6 p.m.
March and April are a good time to support the food banks during fundraisers or individual giving because the Feinstein Foundation divides $1 million to all agencies nationwide participating in a challenge, including in Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene, based on cash donations and food donations by the pound during the two months.
Participating agencies receive a minimum of $250 and a maximum of $35,000 in the challenge.
