Senior targeted in phone bill scam

COEUR d'ALENE - The recorded message that came via phone call Thursday morning said the Coeur d'Alene woman owed $840.

She could pay immediately with a credit card, the man's voice said, and keep her phone from being disconnected.

The woman knew better. She wasn't behind on her phone bill, and had no intention of giving anyone a credit card number.

"I'm alert," the 70-year-old said. "I still have my head together."

The woman hung up and called her phone service provider to confirm her account was current. She reported what she believes was a scam call that rang in her house about 11 a.m.

"It shook me for a little bit," she said.

The Lake City resident, who asked that her name not be published, worries other seniors might receive a similar call and fall victim to the ruse.

"I don't want that happen to it them," she said.

Embezzler arrested for dodging jail

SANDPOINT - A Priest River woman convicted of embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from her former employer was arrested Tuesday for failing to serve her jail sentence.

Judge Debra Heise ordered Nicole Jody Lynn Love held without bail pending a hearing on her sentence compliance, which is set for April 4 1st District Court.

Love pleaded guilty to grand theft for embezzling from CityServiceValcon in 2010. She committed the thefts while employed as the fuel distributor's Oldtown branch assistant manager.

The case plodded toward trial and was briefly held up by Love's claims that an unidentified benefactor was willing to pay restitution in the case, but the financial savior never materialized.

District Judge Steve Verby sentenced Love, 36, last September. The court mostly hewed to the recommendations contained in a plea agreement in the case.
