COEUR d'ALENE - The Spring Dash is, for year 31, back.

It's still five miles.

It's still a fundraiser for United Way of Kootenai County.

It's still for young and old, fast and slow, walkers and runners.

But new this year is where it will start, and finish, on Sunday, April 21.

Due to construction at McEuen Field and Front Avenue, the Spring Dash will start near 7th and Mullan, near City Hall.

The new parking area will be the staging area of late registration, and for vendors and refreshments after the run.

"We believe this will be a much nicer area, with lots of space to gather a crowd," said Caryl Johnston, United Way executive director.

To make up the difference in distance from its prior starting area at 5th and Front, the course will extend farther on the Centennial Trail.

The out-and-back course will still wind its way through the Sanders Beach neighborhood. Organizers are hoping the fun run attracts more than 2,000 participants.

The Dash raises about $12,000 yearly for United Way of Kootenai County's community care fun.

There will be refreshments and food at the finish and there will be awards. A second water stop, this one at the turnaround point, has been added.

Registration: Kootenaiunitedway.org or Active.com.

General registration is $20 and children younger than 10 are $5. Registered runners and walkers will receive a Spring Dash T-shirt designed by a Kootenai County student.

A "Tot-Trot" begins at 9 a.m., wheelchair race at 9:30 a.m., and the main race at 10. The Dash is a qualifier for Bloomsday's second seeding.

The Spring Dash is presented by the Bank of America. Coeur Mines and the Coeur d'Alene Press are major sponsors.

A mother's words, and love, echo in time

If I am quiet for a moment, I can hear her voice and I have to chuckle because her words were not always calm, sweet and reassuring. Oh, not that she was mean. She was just speaking her mind and yes, wanted to have a little fun at the expense of those she loved.
