A pair of people alleged to have been selling heroin to high school students and other supposed clients pleaded not guilty Thursday in Flathead District Court.
Stephanie Quimby, 21, of Kalispell, and Jerry Saunders, 24, are charged with felony criminal possession with intent to distribute.
Quimby is also charged with felony counts of conspiracy in the criminal distribution of dangerous drugs and criminal possession of dangerous drugs, while Saunders also is charged with felony criminal distribution of dangerous drugs.
Their alleged supplier, Zane Root, 21, of Kalispell, also faces drug charges.
According to a court document, a Northwest Drug Task Force agent obtained a search warrant to record drug transactions between an informant, Quimby, and others at Quimby’s home. The informant then allegedly bought two “points” of heroin from Quimby for $80. A point is one-tenth of a gram, or enough for a single use.
The document states that as a search of the home began, Quimby was apprehended trying to leave. During the search, Saunders reportedly returned to the residence and more than 10 grams of heroin was found in his pocket.
A search of Quimby’s purse allegedly turned up two grams of heroin, two hydrocodone pills and nearly $1,100 in cash.
Quimby and Saunders then allegedly offered to assist the agents, identifying Root as their supplier. The document states Quimby then called Root and told him she and Saunders had $460 they owed him for heroin.
Root allegedly arrived within 15 minutes.
Root was charged with felony conspiracy in the criminal distribution of dangerous drugs. Root also is facing a felony charge of criminal distribution of dangerous drugs after allegedly selling three points of heroin to an informant for $120 on Jan. 7, 2012.
Root was charged in 2009 with two felony counts of criminal distribution of dangerous drugs for allegedly selling cocaine, ecstasy and oxycodone to a drug task force agent as well as another felony count of the same charge for selling cocaine to an informant.
Those charges eventually were transferred into Flathead Youth Court, however, and all of Root’s juvenile case files have been sealed.
In later interviews, Quimby and Saunders allegedly admitted selling heroin to many people, including minors, and said they knew some of the buyers were in high school.
If Quimby is convicted of all her charges, she faces between two and life plus 25 years in prison as well as a fine of up to $150,000. Her next hearing is set for April 10.
She is currently incarcerated in the Flathead County Detention Center, where her bond is set at $25,000 after being reduced from $50,000 at her initial appearance.
If Saunders is convicted of all his charges, he faces between two years and life plus 20 years in prison as well as a fine of up to $100,000. His next hearing is set for April 10.
He is also currently incarcerated in the county jail, where his bond is set at $40,000.
If Root is convicted of all his charges, he faces between two years and two consecutive life terms in prison as well as a fine of up to $100,000. Arraignment hearings on both of Root’s new cases are set for March 28.
Root is currently released after posting bond totaling $60,000.
