It sure looks like that tall skinny kid with the straw hat has a promising rodeo career ahead of him.

Brady Portenier, a high school senior from Caldwell, Idaho, was the lone rider to stay on a bull for the full eight seconds Saturday night during the final performance of the Rocky Mountain Classic PRCA Rodeo at Majestic Valley Arena.

Portenier turned in a veteran-like show with his 84-point go on a testy bull named 45 Hell Yea. That earned the rookie a nice first-place check worth $1,598.

He was also the lone bull rider to make the eight second whistle for both nights.

Portenier, who was bucked off just after the whistle sounded, celebrated his dazzling debut by throwing his hat into the center of the arena.

“I thought I heard the whistle kind of early,” he said.

“It was a lot of fun.”

Portenier, who turned 18 on Feb. 22, picked up his PRCA card a few days later.

“This was the closest rodeo I could enter,” he said.

“It was a lot of fun,” he said.

“I just heard he (45 Hell Yea) was a great bull.

“It just happened and I let it happen,” he said of winning.

“Yeah, every day (I think about winning). I think about it all the time.”

Portenier’s ride was the final one of the night. Another rider was scheduled to go after him, but he was injured by his bull in the chutes.

“Told her I won it,” he said of his mom, who he called immediately with the good news.

“She was pretty surprised.”

And Portenier ...

“Yeah, a little bit,” he said of his stunning win.

Portenier’s performance capped off two rousing nights of rodeo action.

Shane Moran of Ulm, in the second session of the saddle bronc, posted an 85 on 706 FD for the highest mark. He was the lone rider to crack 80 points.

Bobby Peters of Pincher Creek, Alberta, won the bareback riding with 81 points on 66 Big Foot.

The top four scores in tie-down roping were all registered during the final performance. Chad Johnson of Cut Bank posted a 9.1 second run for the best time in a tightly-bunched field.

Roddy Cameron of Townsend dropped his steer in a quick 3.8 seconds to take first place in that event on Saturday.

Team ropers Kevin Peterson of Kilgore, Neb., and Orry Fruit of Ekalaka had the best time — 6.6 seconds — to finish first, also on Saturday.

Shelly Anzick of Livingston won the barrel racing in 14.76 seconds.

But for local cowboy LeRoy Eash, it was a so-so rodeo.

The Fortine cowboy did mark a score — 63 points on 841 Deep Water Bay — in the saddle bronc, but that was well down the line in the final standings.

“He ran a little bit ... it took me a few jumps to get him going,” Eash said.

“A pretty nice bronc, really. A younger horse who hasn’t been out a whole lot.”

Although Eash says he was hoping to score a little higher, he was satisfied with his showing.

“Tonight, I had a little different attitude than I normally do,” he said.

“I was just gonna have some fun, no matter what the outcome.”

And he did just that.
