Fr. Roderick Garvey, 89

Father Roderick J. Garvey was born in Sept. 15, 1923, in Coeur d’Alene, the second son of William and Laura Garvey. Died March 8, 2013.

He attended IHM Academy in Coeur d’Alene through eighth grade, then preparatory school of Holy Redeemer in Oakland, Calif., and then Oconomowoc, Wisc., where he was ordained to the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary on Tuesday Jan. 6, 1949.

Later he earned his doctorate in theology and psyschology.

He was a chaplain for a penitentiary for the state of California.

After retirement he asked permission to reopen St. Cecilia Church in Jal, N.M., where he served until ill health caused him to reside at St. Clement Health Care Center, in Liguori, Mo.

Previously deceased in his family were his father and mother, William Joseph and Laura, his brother William Jr., Sister Mary Kathleen Garvey, of Immaculate Heart, and sisters Bernita Cuzzetto and Joan Steele.

He is survived by four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Colleen and Jim Chase, Fran Hagen, Rita and Don Fitzpatrick, and Mary Walker McFarland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
