YAKIMA - Moses Lake baseball picked up two wins on the road in doubleheader action at Davis High School Friday.

The Chiefs beat the Pirates 8-1 in game one and 8-2 in game two. The victories improve Moses Lake to 3-0 in the Columbia Basin Big Nine Conference and 6-0 overall, and puts the Chiefs in a three-way tie for first with Eastmont and Wenatchee in the league standings.

"The guys played really well," coach Quintz Whitaker said. "Our defense looked sharp, our leadoff guys who are supposed to get on base got on base, and the guys who are supposed to knock them in did so. We also had some solid pitching and got a real good outing form Hector Zavala in his first start of the season."

The first game of the twin bill saw Moses Lake jump out to a 2-0 lead in the Chiefs first at bat. Davis got a run back in the bottom of the second inning to close the gap to 2-1.

Moses Lake stretched its lead to 4-1 with 2 runs in the Chiefs half of the third. Three more runs in the top of the sixth and one in the seventh put the game out of reach for the Pirates.

Colton Kelly had the hot bat for Moses Lake with two hits in four plate appearances and 3 RBI. Hector Zavala went five innings on the hill for the Chiefs to pick up the win, allowing 1 run off 6 hits while striking out 4 Pirate batters. Davis committed 7 errors in the game.

Brad Fox, Elliott Sage and Drew Loera had 2 hits each and combined for 8 RBI to lead the Chiefs to a convincing win in game two of the doubleheader.

Moses Lake scored a run in the first, two in the third, three in the fourth and two in the sixth to go up 8-0. Davis scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to avoid the shutout then got one more in the seventh, but that was all the runs the Pirates could muster.

Chase Tunstall pitched 5 and 1/3 innings of solid ball, giving up 1 run off 3 hits for the win.

Moses Lake is back on the diamond Saturday for a nonleague doubleheader at home against Mead March 30.

The first game gets underway at 11 a.m. The Chiefs are then off for spring break. Moses Lake resumes play for a single league game at Sunnyside April 9.

"Were out of action for 10 days following the Mead game," Whitaker said. "But we'll scrimmage the following Tuesday and Wednesday and practice hard to stay sharp and be ready to get back at it against Sunnyside."
