At a meeting in St. Regis on March 19, representatives from both the St. Regis and Alberton School Districts were on hand along with members of the public to discuss merging the two high school football teams beginning next season.
According to St. Regis Athletic Director Damian Droessler, both schools agreed to a merger and representatives will present the Montana High School Association with the idea for its approval on April 15.
“It’s (the merger) sustaining a program and maintaining varsity level play,” Droessler said. “It also lets us develop junior varsity competition in the hopes the students can develop.”
If the merger is approved by the MHSA, Droessler said home games and practices would be split evenly between the two campuses with each school having head coach representative.
Both schools, according to Droessler, are “low on numbers” and the merger would enable the teams to participate in full scrimmages during practice. If the merger is approved, the new team will still play six-man football for the 2013 season.
