SWIMMING
CAST at Senior Sectionals: The Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team Crocs took two swimmers to Federal Way, Wash., for the Western Regional Sectional Meet March 14-17. This is the highest level short course (25-yard pool) meet in the Western United States and featured the deepest and fastest talent in the pool for the short course season.
On the women's side the likes of 4-time Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin was there and on the men's side Cal's Tyler Messerschmidt, the phenomenal freestyle sprinter, was on hand.
Bryce Kananowicz (17, junior at Lake City) and Ethan Cordes (15, sophomore at Coeur d'Alene High) both qualified for the meet and swam to personal bests in almost all events.
Kananowicz's standout swims were his 3rd place finish in the 400 IM at a 3:54.45, a 5th-place finish in the 200 back with a 1:47.89, an 8th-place finish in the 200 IM with a 1:51.70, an 11th-place finish in the 200 fly with a 1:50.04, a 12th-place finish in the 100 back with a 50.19, and a 14th-place finish in the 100 fly with a 49.38.
His versatility, as demonstrated in his results in the 200 and 400 individual medley, has drawn inquiries from virtually every top swimming school in the nation with his coach fielding inquiries on a daily basis.
Cordes did not disappoint with a 20th-place finish in the 100 fly with a 50.00, a 32nd-place finish in the 50 free with a 21.42, a 35th-place finish in the 200 fly with a 1:55.39, a 56th-place finish in the 100 back with a 52.83, and a 68th in the 100 free with a 47.57.
His time of 50.00 in the 100 fly puts him at the top of his age group nationally. His 21.42 in the 50 freestyle broke the Inland Empire record.
