COEUR d'ALENE - Desirae Tinoco and Kellsi Parson had RBIs in the bottom of the second inning as the North Idaho College Cardinals softball team beat the fourth-ranked Salt Lake Bruins 2-1 in the second game of a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Memorial Field.

It is the first time NIC has beaten Salt Lake since May 2, 2009, when the Cardinals won 7-4 at Memorial Field. Salt Lake had beaten NIC 15 straight times since.

"We talked in our pregame about making some offensive adjustments," NIC coach Don Don Williams said. "We needed to hit the ball down and make them earn outs. We hit a lot of fly ball outs in the first three games, but were able to hit a lot of down balls in that fourth game. They're a great team, but we had a couple sneak through and they made some mistakes. It was nice to finally be able to produce some runs."

Sophomore Emily Perlich held Salt Lake (32-5, 26-2) to six hits, striking out two and walking only one for NIC (12-23, 8-18), which hosts Skagit Valley on Tuesday at Memorial Field.

"Emily did a good job of working ahead in the count and getting the leadoff batter out each inning," Williams said. "She made some good adjustments after being a little nervous on Friday."

Kelsey LaVaute had three hits in the second game for NIC.

In the first game, Salt Lake shut out NIC for the third straight game, 9-0.
