The Flathead Valley Jazz Society hosts its Spring Jazz Roundup Sunday.

The all-day showcase of local jazz groups kicks off at 1 p.m. in the Kalispell Eagles Ballroom.

The performing groups will play dance music of all styles, including hot jazz and swing from the 1920s and 1930s, big band jazz from the 1940s, smooth jazz and blues. The grand finale features the Flathead’s own premier Latin jazz ensemble, Cocinando, which will give the celebration a “cinco de mayo” flair, Jazz Society President Karla West said.

The event also features a special guest group: the Flathead Valley Community College Jazz Ensemble, under the director of Sky Thoreson, the Jazz Society’s director of education.

The Jazz Ensemble is part of FVCC’s recently established music transfer program and has been offered for credit for the last two years. The ensemble recently performed at the popular Chef’s Table event and will also play at the school’s commencement exercises May 17.

Other performing groups include the Flathead Society Dance Orchestra, Company Brass, La Nota Blues and Jazz, Sax-O-Phun, Swingin’ on High Big Band, Swinging Light and the Don Lawrence Orchestra.

Admission is $30 for the entire showcase. Jazz Society members can show their membership cards at the door to get a discount.

The musicians are donating their time for the event so all proceeds can go toward the Jazz Society’s Glacier Jazz Stampede in October.
