PREP BASEBALL: Johnson sparks Hawks to 4A IEL crown

MOSCOW - Lakeland's Evan Johnson finished the day with four hits - three coming in the first game - as the Hawks swept a 4A Inland Empire League doubleheader 11-0 and 6-3 against the Moscow Bears to clinch the league title Tuesday at Bear Field.
Lakeland (16-3, 8-0 4A IEL) will host the opening round of the Region 1 tournament starting on Saturday at Gorton Field. The Hawks will play at 1 p.m. vs. the winner of Saturday's 10 a.m. first game between Moscow and Sandpoint.
The regional champ advances to state May 16-18 at Bishop Kelly High in Boise.
C.J. Crane also had three hits and in the second game, Jeremy McKinney and Blake Wrotenbery had two hits each for Lakeland.
Moscow is 2-4 4A IEL.

COEUR d'ALENE - Levi Pereira had four RBIs, including a solo home run in the sixth inning as the Vikings rallied from a 7-2 deficit after three innings to beat the Timberwolves in a 5A Inland Empire League game at Lake City High.
“The first three innings, we competed and played pretty well,” Lake City coach Travis Georgius said. “In the fourth inning, our bats went quiet and they heated up. Coeur d’Alene just hit the ball well in the last four innings.”
Nick Nyquist had three hits and three RBIs for Coeur d’Alene (15-5, 7-3 5A IEL), which hosts Post Falls today at 4 p.m.
Mitch Bevacqua had three hits for Lake City (7-12, 4-8), which hosts Sandpoint on Thursday.

LEWISTON — The Bengals held the Trojans to only two hits in the first game and rallied to win Game 2 after allowing seven runs in the first inning of a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader at Church Field.
In the first game, Kurtis Wiltse doubled and Austin Buschbacher singled for Post Falls, which committed three errors. Buschbacher, Matt Hammond and Derek Bumgarner had two hits each in the second game for Post Falls (6-12, 2-8 5A IEL), which travels to Coeur d’Alene today at 4 p.m.
Lewiston (18-4, 9-3) clinched at least a tie for the league title, though Coeur d’Alene can earn the No. 1 seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament with wins today at home vs. Post Falls, and Thursday at Post Falls.

ST. MARIES — The host Lumberjacks stole 18 bases in 18 tries in sweeping the Wildcats in nonleague play at City Park.
“We were very aggressive on the bases,” St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. “Our kids came out and played pretty good defense. I really liked our approach offensively; it looked like we were real comfortable in our at-bats.”
Tyson Truscott struck out nine and pitched a four-hitter for St. Maries (13-2) in the opener, and Dylan Wilson hit a two-run single in a seven-run third.
Jack Long and Tucker Figueroa hit RBI singles in a three-run third for Kellogg-Wallace (0-15).
In the second game, Wilson went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored; D.J. Turner was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Janks Maier was 2 for 2 with an RBI and three runs.
Kellogg-Wallace plays host to the Lakeland JV on Thursday. St. Maries hosts Grangeville on Saturday to wrap up the regular season.
