PREP SOFTBALL: Kastning, Prockish help Lakeland clinch league title

MOSCOW - Bekah Kastning had two RBIs in the first game and Kari Prockish added a two-run single in the fourth inning of the second game as the Lakeland Hawks beat the Moscow Bears 12-1 and 6-1 at Ghormley Park to clinch the 4A Inland Empire League title Tuesday.

Lakeland will host the Region 1 tournament starting next Tuesday in Rathdrum.

"It was a cold one and snowing, but the girls pushed through and got the wins," Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said. "The girls stuck it out and played well as a team and did a good job."

Prockish finished the day with five hits for Lakeland (11-7, 6-0 4A IEL), which hosts Cheney on Thursday.

Moscow (0-4 4A IEL) hosts Sandpoint (6-10, 2-4) today.

COEUR d’ALENE — Casey Stangel drove in four runs and struck out 12 as the Timberwolves beat the visiting Vikings at Lake City High to clinch the 5A Inland Empire League championship.

Lake City (18-0, 9-0 5A IEL) will be the No. 1 seed and face No. 4 seed Post Falls next Tuesday to open the 5A Region 1 tournament. No. 2 Coeur d’Alene (14-7, 6-5) will face No. 3 Lewiston in the other matchup.

Vanessa Shippy went 4 for 4 with four runs scored and Hailey Jackson had a two-run single in the first inning for Lake City, which travels to Post Falls today. Shippy hit a solo home run in the second inning and Stangel added a two-run shot.

Zoe Clark homered in the second inning for Coeur d’Alene, which travels to Post Falls on Thursday.

LEWISTON — Nine errors in two games by Post Falls, and 23 hits by Lewiston led to a sweep for the Bengals in 5A Inland Empire League play at Airport Park.

Dara Kolar went 2 for 3 with a two-run double in the fifth inning of the second game for Post Falls (3-15, 0-8 5A IEL), which plays host to Lake City today at 3:30.

Alyssa Huffaker of Lewiston (13-9, 5-7) hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning of the second game to end the game on the 10-run rule.

ST. MARIES — Amber Eixenberger hit a two-run double in the first game for the Wildcats and Haylee Waddell had two hits in the second game for the Lumberjacks as the teams split a nonleague doubleheader.

In the first game, Kellogg drew 18 walks, while in the second game the Lumberjacks reached on 23 walks.

“It was just kind of a fun mess today,” St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said. “It was a pretty competitive first game and was close until that sixth inning when they scored 11 runs.”

Waddell finished with four hits for St. Maries (6-13), which travels to Timberlake today.

Kellogg (11-6) opens the 3A District 1 tournament against Bonners Ferry on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Timberlake High.
