COEUR d'ALENE - Nick Nyquist hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings beat the Post Falls Trojans 9-3 in a 5A Inland Empire League baseball game Wednesday at Ted Page Field.
"One game away from where we want to be, still learning to compete, but hopefully we're building to where we want to be at the end of the season," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said.
With a win today, Coeur d'Alene (16-5, 8-3 5A IEL) will tie Lewiston (18-4, 9-3) for the Inland Empire League title, but will earn the No. 1 seed to next week's Region 1 tournament by way of a tiebreaker over the Bengals.
Coeur d'Alene and Lewiston split four games this season, but the Vikings hold a better record against the third place Timberwolves (4-0) than the Bengals (3-1).
Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls (6-13, 2-9) play again today at Post Falls at 4 p.m.
Alec Barrowcliff and Nyquist had two RBIs each for Coeur d'Alene.
Kurtis Wiltse went 2 for 4 with a run scored for Post Falls.

POST FALLS — Vanessa Shippy had four hits and scored four runs as the Timberwolves beat the Trojans in a 5A Inland Empire League game.
Casey Stangel homered in the first inning and doubled in the second and third inning and Amy Welsh had three RBIs for Lake City (19-0, 10-0 5A IEL), which hosts Sandpoint today at 4 p.m.
Katie King went 2 for 3 for Post Falls (3-16, 0-9), which hosts Coeur d’Alene today at 4 p.m., before traveling to face Lake City again on Friday in the annual “Save 2nd Base” games on Friday at 3 p.m.

SPIRIT LAKE — Sydnie Malloy went 3 for 3 with three runs scored as the Tigers beat the Lumberjacks in a nonleague game.
“I thought we hit the ball well today,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “We still had too many errors (7) and we need to fix that. Hopefully we’ll bring our bats with us tomorrow.”
Timberlake (10-6) opens the 3A District 1 tournament today against Priest River at 3 p.m. at Timberlake High. Kellogg faces Bonners Ferry in the second game at 5.
Kari Ghramm had two hits for St. Maries (6-14), which competes in the 2A District 1-2 tournament May 7-8 in Orofino.
